About Sonia

Sonia Lowman is the Writer and Director of BLACK BOYS, an award-winning documentary illuminating the humanity of Black men and boys in America, released on NBC Peacock in September 2020. Sonia’s first film, TEACH US ALL, a documentary on school segregation in the U.S., was acquired by Ava DuVernay (ARRAY) and released on Netflix in September 2017. Her 2020 short film, WAR & GRACE, about the maternal health crisis in war-torn South Sudan, won the Grand Prix in the World Health Organization’s Health for All Film Festival. And her 2024 short film, INDOMITABLE, narrated by Sienna Miller and featuring original music by Ben Harper, highlights the mental health crisis emerging in Ukraine in the wake of the Russian invasion.

Sonia's docu-series, WOMEN WHO RISE, which celebrates women working on the frontlines of war and disaster worldwide, will premiere on PBS in February 2025. Her docu-series on the human impacts of climate change, CLIMATE CHANGING US, is currently in production.

In addition to making films, Sonia has spent nearly 20 years storytelling for international nonprofits and holds a Master’s degree from the London School of Economics.
